Letter to Future Community Service Youths

Light One Little Candle
Book Drive Participants

Light One Little Candle is a great group that helps families feel better. Sometimes grownups in a family can get sick and not feel very well. During these times, when they can not play with you they would love to sit with their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or good young friends and read a book together.

We are asking you to help us collect these books!

By collecting brand new books for our books cart, through a book drive at your school, church, synagogue or community center, we are able to give them to the people that come to Moores UCSD Cancer Center to take home with them.

By your hard work you are giving someone a great gift. Happiness, joy, laughter all the things that would make a sick person feel much better. Thank you for your interest in making a difference in people's lives. We look forward to hearing from with any questions you may have.

And most of all, have a GREAT BOOK DRIVE!

Here is the letter as a PDF-Document for you to print out and share!

How to Organize a Book Drive

Organizing/Hosting a BookDrive is relatively easy and has long-lasting impacts on families dealing with cancer. Simply set aside a week or two for a book drive at your chosen location, advertise the event, and watch your collection boxes fill with books! Afterwards, the new books you have collected will immediately be placed on the Light One Little Candle Book Cart at Moores UCSD Cancer Center, and distributed to cancer patients receiveing treatment, to share with their families. It is an immediate reward for your hardwork!

Where Do I Begin?

If you'd like to get involved in our efforts of supporting cancer patients with young children in their lives, you can get started right here by reading our 4 Steps for a successful BookDrive!

1. Plan
Find someone to be the main contact person for the BookDrive!
Determine the time and location
Gather boxes and other necessary materials

2. Host
Advertise - Get the word out through posters, putting up flyers and sending letters and e-mails.
Run the BookDrive! -- Set up your donation boxes and watch them fill up!

3. Sort, Box, and Ship
Sort the books as best you can by age/grade level
While sorting, make sure all books are brand new
Count how many boxes and books you have, and e-mail us with that information! That way we’ll know what to expect and can track your donation accordingly.
Ship your boxes to:
